Really fascinating discussion.
There is an episode of “Mary Tyler Moore” that first aired in 1972 (confession–I adore vintage television…) in which Mary Richards wears a boxy jacket-and-tie combination to work simply because she likes how it looks, only to realize when in the office that everyone thinks her clothing is a feminist political statement. Not much appears to have changed, according to the discussion on “Already Pretty.”
